Kahwe - Sit Back EP

  • Joe Cowie's last EP for Anjunadeep was special not just for the young Leeds producer, but also for the label's reputation. It was a beautifully balanced record, where rich basslines met fluttering melodies, and samples were deployed with a veteran's touch. Taking this into account, you can't help feeling a little shortchanged by Sit Back. The title track is sweet enough, with shimmering pads poking through a soft organ motif and fizzy hi-hats, but it feels limp. "Deeper Love" fares better, revolving around a repetitive vocal loop and heavily-reverbed chords, and Cowie shows enough nous to push its primary asset—swaggering, crisp percussion—right up in the mix. The EP's most arresting moment is "601," which untethers from Kahwe's standard deep house tropes and builds into an acid-coated express train. It's proficient but lacks the emotional edge of that last EP. There are moments that are easy to admire here, but nothing to fall in love with.
