- Former Drop The Lime man Luca Venezia has been getting busy under his Curses moniker recently, with his Call The Doctor EP for Let's Play House sister label Throne Of Blood preceding this one by only a couple of months. As on Call The Doctor, Bark In The Dark finds Venzia exploring house music while retaining some of the grime and dubstep-influenced bass that was his DTL calling card.
The title track spends its first three minutes tottering along on a hands-in-the-air key refrain and wheezy effects, before rushing into a cataclysmic bass drop that gives the track a not displeasing tongue-in-cheek quality. Naum Gabo's remix of "Bark In The Dark" dollops malevolence onto the original's goofy charms, with monolithic slabs of distorted bass and rumbling drums forcing the original's dayglow elements to battle for exposure.
On the flip, "Eyes On You" pairs a moody bass rumble with tumbling synth chords and a rueful vocal refrain. "Need You"'s heavenly pads and echoing voice samples give it straighforward house feel early on. True to form, though, Venezia can't resist adding tougher elements, with sharp keys and then a heavy bass riff barreling in elbows first to remind us just who it is we're listening to.
