- Although he's been making records for nearly ten years, Ø [Phase]'s Frames Of Reference, released last year on Token, was the producer's debut album. Rather like Function's Incubation, which was also a long time coming and released last year, Frames Of Reference was a collection of nuanced, propulsive techno tools sequenced into unexpected narrative arcs. It's telling that even though only one of its ten tracks was less than five minutes, the album was compelling throughout.
"Perplexed," originally a single backed with the album standout "On The Edge" and here remixed by Rødhåd, is a case in point. Spacious and beautifully paced, it built confidently from a stab-and-kick pattern to a subtle club track shot through with a powerful melancholia. Rødhåd keeps the steady pace of the original in his ten-minute rework, with understated pads and a mournful melody that snakes around the core rhythm before culminating in a subtle, satisfying breakdown. On his remix of the slightly weaker album cut "Dirtro II," Robert Hood strips the track to its rhythmic framework and adds ripples of chords to the mix, giving it an altogether more urgent atmosphere.
