- Fans of Chicago's Derrick Carter will be in their element - having listened to his 'Choice', they are now invited to trawl through his remix archives courtesy of Classic. 'Nearest Hits And Greatest Misses' - great title - is quite apt when you look at the artists in question, and wonder what has happened to the likes of Karen Ramirez, The Beloved and Modjo.
In fact the Beloved track 'Ease The Pressure', the second part of their comeback in 1996, has a booming, funky bassline and some cleverly filtered vocals that make it much more dancefloor friendly than the original. The remixes of Ramirez and Modjo are minimal and more formulaic, but still offer good alternatives to the original mixes.
Carter's remix of Tortoise's 'In Sarah...' is one of the successes here, simple on the surface but revealing a close knit set of textures on close inspection, with keyboard, glockenspiel, filtered sounds and of course Carter's twisted bassline. The Human League's 'Don't You Want Me' is played deadpan but given a fair swagger, but the choice track for me is La Tropicana, a floor filler that builds up a space age disco sound, with latin and samba elements perfectly suited to Carter's remix laptop.
A useful anthology then - not always peak time Derrick Carter but with enough rarities to interest his many fans.
