Andy Ukhtomsky & Disrute - Horizons EP

  • A nightclub owner recently told me how quickly his younger patrons seem to develop a sense for music and fashion. Ten years ago, he believes, people gradually learned about culture as they grew older. Now, the internet can bring them up to speed right away. While there's been no shortage of young guns in dance music history, names like Happa (aged 15 when his debut came out) and Nicolas Jaar (18) do seem to be popping up more frequently. Melbourne label Loophole presents a milder example with Andy Ukhtomsky and Disrute, two locals aged 22 and 19. The duo's debut has an intensely contemporary feel, nodding to cross-pollinators like Scuba and Cosmin TRG, embodied by the techno crispness of the title track's percussion, or its fluttering trance breakdown. "Prospects" tells a similar story, gradually unfurling a shimmering melody over beats that feel both techno and dubstep in nature. Each cut's pay-off might be expected, but it's hard not to be impressed by the level of maturity on display everywhere else.
