Blood Music - Blood Music EP

  • Blood Music is Simon Pomery, a multi-instrumentalist with a nice line in moody coldwave cut with ugly, blackened post-punk and industrial. Released on Powell's Diagonal label, his self-titled debut EP's calling card is its unconventional structure: A1 and B1 are about eight and seven minutes long respectively, A2 and B2 both 47-second shadows of the longer tracks. Despite its length, "Raw Earth Material" feels exploratory rather than self-indulgent. Pomery repeats "You'll never see it again" amid a blistering tumult of crashing drums and squalling guitar riffs that fall off to reveal a grim ballasted bassline. "Speak Like Violence" opens with a metallic sword-scrape and warbling drone that quickly descends into a propulsive, paranoid drum pattern and dread bassline, small chinks of glimmering synth occasionally peeking through. Pomery's voice is heavy with latent violence, but a little pale against all that meaty instrumentation. It's always difficult to establish serious apocalyptic doom within the confines of the 12-inch, but Pomery pulls it off with his combination of feral, unhinged songs and brief but ominous drone pieces.
