- So it's all back to Underworld Towers, which on this evidence is a crazy place to live. This is a CD that varies wildly from track to track, so if you're expecting great musical coherence then think again! That's not a big criticism though, for Messrs Hyde and Smith have chosen some great tracks that make for a vibrant collection, never dull.
On the slow side of things there's some peerless R&B from D'Angelo in 'Brown Sugar' and TLC in 'Creep', surely two of the best slow jams of the 1990s. Also Gregory Isaacs ('Public Eye') and an overlengthy introduction in the form of Gil Scott Heron's 'B Movie'. The closest thing to Underworld's brand of faster techno comes in the form of Rave Signal's exhilharating charge 'Horse Power', whilst by far the best DJing moment of the disc comes when Toots & The Maytals' '54-46' blends in to LTJ Bukem's 'Music', an inspired moment. Dave Gahan finds himself 'drum and bassed' on 'Barrel Of A Gun', which mixes into the Aphex Twin's peerless 'Didgeridoo'.
From all this you'll gather that Underworld's record collection must be the envy of many. What would be really interesting now would be to hear a techno based compilation from them, as they clearly relish the art of compiling records.
