House Of Black Lanterns - Truth & Loss

  • After launching with Call Super's The Present Tense, Houndstooth's second release comes from Dylan Richards' latest manifestation, House Of Black Lanterns. The man otherwise known as King Cannibal relocated from South London to Berlin 18 months ago to begin working on a new name partly inspired by Michael Mann's early thrillers. Setting the tone for a closely trailing album, Truth & Loss sees a shift away from jungle-structured industrialism towards a driven, and often score-like, strain of electronica. Haunted and atmospherically epic, the title track contrasts dystopian synths with a sparse grid of footwork percussion. Stylistically, it sits somewhere between DJ Krush's Mo' Wax-era soundscapes and Kuedo's Severant, yet its more menacing than both. The remix by Exit Records affiliate Fracture doesn't steer far off, with rolling snares and additional bass-weight creating a steppier, more floor-fit alternative. "Like A Warrior" sees Trinidadian MC Juakali laying foreboding spoken words over a Kevin Martin-esque dub-score to resonating effect. Richards' doom-mongering edit of Ghettozoid's "Boy Toys" completes a strong package.
