Kid Culture - Visions EP

  • Kid Culture's records for labels like Suara, Sincopat and Remote Area have typically focused on a chunky, loop-heavy sound of the sort that routinely gets called "big room," but tunes like 2011's "Saraswati" suggested that the Amsterdam producer could also be lured into the back room on occasion. His slower, more sensitive side shines brightly on his new EP for AFFKT's Valencia-based Sincopat label. Both tracks have a sweet, tuneful, eyes-closed vibe to them, with guitar-like melodies arrayed over spare (but not simplistic) house rhythms. You can hear echoes of John Talabot and Kalabrese's lush indie-dance fusions, and Mano Le Tough's recent material provides an even more direct point of comparison. If "Visions" has a particularly earwormy quality, that might be because the melody echoes Cat Stevens' "Moonshadow," however accidentally. "Where I Am Going" garlands ringing chords with an easygoing, arpeggiated synthesizer lead; the nimble, clip-clopping beat strikes the perfect balance between carefree and purpose-driven. X-Press 2 tamp down the melody and amp up the groove in their "Visions" remix; AFFKT goes the opposite direction with his remix, turning "Where I Am Going" ever so slightly more epic.
