J.T. Stewart - Krill Proto

  • Newworldaquarium continues to drive his fans crazy by (presumably) stockpiling his own material, but while we wait, he's started a new label, Indische Buurt, to at least let us know he hasn't disappeared completely. American producer J.T. Stewart (AKA $tinkworx) is his first signing, and Krill Proto is as bold an inauguration as any new label could hope for. Stewart is no stranger to oceanic motifs, having given his records titles like Coelacanth, Aquapolis and Drexion Caves. Still, referencing a miniature shrimp seems like a misnomer at first, until one considers how evocative the record is of the teeming, chaotic swarms the animal travels in. Both sides open with quasi-locked grooves, giving little warnings before the needle slides into the main track. Even with this caution, "SWFYSU" is startlingly hostile, immediately launching into a ferocious arpeggio that perches above a New Beat-esque strut for the duration. The zonked-out "Krill" is more sparing in its arpeggiations, which intermittently give way to foreboding string pads amid a similar low BPM lurch. Drexciya has become one of dance music's most overused buzzwords, but Stewart references their spirit like few others can, matching bubbling-over intensity with a sterling sense of funk.
