- Italian producer and DJ Fabrizio Lapiana has often revealed an affinity for the deeper side of club-ready techno, most notably with the sounds he's created and curated for his Rome-based Attic Music. With his new Sustain project, Lapiana seems to have more intimate environs in mind. Extending past eight minutes in length, each of the two untitled tracks on Sustain 01 patiently stretches out a similar series of loose, dubbed-out chords and reverberated claps. One is set just below 120 BPM, and has the sort of bare essentials—a vaguely insistent 4/4 rhythm to go along with the requisite break in the middle—that just might work on the floor.
The 100 BPM version on the flip, meanwhile, is even more hypnotic, and not just because of the reduced tempo. It moves, slow and easy, through sensually sparse, syncopated low-end throbs and chords that reveal unintelligible, effects-soaked vocal loops. Overall, nothing too fancy here, but certainly the right type of stuff for those who like their techno mellow and moody.
