- Hollywood's Dim Mak is a labyrinth of ultra-dark, low lights, making it a sultry and intimate atmosphere despite being a large space. Upon our entrance to the recent Beyond Wonderland pre-party, Andrei Osyka from DJ trio Droog was on the decks spinning the slow house, Huxley's "Let It Go" among his selections. The steady pace established a perfect set-up for Jamie Jones, whose set was darker and heavier in comparison.
The crowd's obvious anticipation and excitement meant that the audience was barely able to contain itself when the headliner took over. This awestruck attitude meddled with the vibe at first, but once everyone relaxed as the set went on, the ensuing smiles and whistles and pulsating arms and feet gave Dim Mak the shape of a real party.
Predictably, there were a slew of Hot Creations and Crosstown Rebel releases aired, thick with signature heavy basslines and catchy, abstracted vocals. Jones's energy seemed to emanate directly into the bodies of his revelers and with each new track. Garnering some of the best responses were his own remix of Green Velvet's "Flash" and Subb-An's "Misleading." The last hour of the set was the real treat, as the highs were softened and reverberating bass dissipated to make room for heavier, crispier kicks that revitalized the trance-induced onlookers with unrelenting techno—a tough ending to a night that reminded you of exactly why Jones is so celebrated.
