Trackman Lafonte & Bon Qui Qui - Trackman Lafonte & Bon Qui Qui

  • Prior to this self-titled debut, Trackman Lafonte & Bonquiqui have appeared in two formats: On YouTube, tagged as "Mysterious 1992 cali-house from San Jose," and in mixes by Legowelt. That information alone is enough to guess that Danny Wolfers has something to do with these four tracks. Each piece builds upon tried-and-tested old school house frameworks, and if you took the drum tracks on their own there'd be little to distinguish them from any number of late '80s or early '90s records. But they stand up to the highlights of Wolfers' catalog in the way they're doused in saturated, spooked strings and organ, and augmented by bizarre, pitch-slurred vocal samples. The overall effect, whether on the trilling, clouded keys and monotone beeps of "Fortune of the Lord" or the elegantly-strung synth line and tube-like funk of "Fascinating Facts," is infectiously imaginative.
