Worthy - No Cure

  • Let's get this straight from the start: Worthy and I are not related. Just in case you start accusing me of nepotism. He's no relation to Detroit techno stalwart Keith either. Instead, Anabatic founder and chief Dirtybird component Worthy is one of the finest exponents of breaks-leaning house this side of Matthew Bushwacka. Although this is an EP which cements the producer's reputation rather than furthers it, there's still bucketloads to admire. "No Cure," built around an old Eazy E vocal sample stretched to breaking point, tethers together a prodding four-note low-end bassline, jet whooshes, phaser gun noises and what sounds like an express train rattling through your living room. It's brash, tough and very manly. The flip, "With This," is more brazen about the dues owed to early electro and hip-hop tunes, summoning up an itchy Bambaataa-style rhythm and fat retro 808 drums. More of a pared down warm-up tool than full-on dance floor attack, it lacks the complexity and vigour of the lead track—that's the one that will have heads nodding.
