- Hip-hop, lounge, house and breaks: Moonstarr mixes himself up on this week's RA podcast.
- RA readers may not immediately recognize the name Moonstarr, but check back through your records from the early '00s and you'll likely see his name as a remixer on a variety of 12-inches. Carl Craig, Jazzanova, Pase Rock, Recloose: Starr—real name Kevin Moon—has worked in some capacity with all of them. His sure hand mixed hip-hop, lounge and breaks, and he does the same today, staying true to the mash-up of sounds that earned him acclaim from respected producers around the world and eventually led to a number of jobs in the world of soundtracks.
In the past year or so, though, Starr has been focusing on his own music, leading to the release of his second full-length late last year on his own Public Transit Recordings. Called Instrumentals Forever, it also includes a recent obsession for Moon: house music. But as you'll hear on his RA podcast, Moon has time for all of them, taking in the huge variety that is his musical world in what just be one of the site's most eclectic podcasts yet and a great taster for his upcoming set at RA's night at Mutek 2009.
What have you been working on recently?
I've been steady hustling my new album, Instrumentals Forever, on Public Transit Recordings overseas. It's soon to be released in Canada. DLP and MP3 formats are available and the feedback has been amazing. I'm very happy at the moment. I've been working on a new album as well as overseeing a new album by Sarah Linhares on PTR and others... I also have a limited 45 coming out featuring Tony Ezzy on the Farfisa organ. Think Ed Lincon or Walter Wanderly with big breaks.
How and where was the mix recorded?
Mix was done half analog / digital with Ableton Live / Torq in my studio with no time stretching, just classic pitch bending.
Can you tell us a little about the mix?
Lotsa breaks and broken bizness. Some new and unreleased Moonstarr joints in there plus classic ones too. I wanted to showcase my sound in the lead up to my set at Mutek this year.
Your Public Transit Recordings label is now only releasing digitally. Was there any reason for the move?
In 2008 we actually released some CDs and vinyl, but sales were low so we have just put some things on the backburner. Distribution has been a bit of a struggle for us and we've recently switched to Sonic Unyon in Canada so we hope to make our products more available and known in independent music shops across the country. We go against the grain with the music we release, so sometimes it's hard to get the message out. However, all our latest releases are always available on www.ptrmusic.com and we have some great new releases planned on all formats: vinyl, digital and CD.
What can people expect from your set at Mutek?
1) Head nods and 2) Fast feets! For Mutek, I'm working on a special set that will showcase my style. Expect everything I've done from upbeat hip-hop to moody techno. I'm on at 10 PM and have 60 minutes, so it will be a challenge but I will try to showcase what I'm all about and get people moving on the dance floor!
You have a background in scoring music for films. What were you involved in, and will you be continuing this line of work?
I worked on a graffiti movie with Pablo Aravena called NEXT A Primer on Urban Painting as well as some other smaller productions. Scoring to visuals is amazing yet challenging work. I've just recently done a remix of a track inspired by a painting for the Biennale project here in Montreal.
What are you up to next?
DJing around town with crews like Disco Cubizm or Scott C from the goods. Working on my new album and supporting other artists and causes via PTR. A possible US and CA tour before the end of the year. I will be playing at a DEMF "broken" party this year with the Bagpak crew on the 22nd of May. Plus hosting the Future Classic radio show with Tashish every other Sunday on CKUT 90.3 FM.
