Domino Records are releasing a comprehensive retrospective of legendary New Yorkers Liquid Liquid. Slip in and out of Phenomenon drops in late May.
The output of the percussive four-piece might be tiny, but the band’s influence on modern punk-funk has been strong: Scottish discoists Optimo named themselves after a Liquid Liquid track, while bands like The Rapture and LCD Soundsystem owe a huge debt to Liquid’s cowbell-loving repetitive grooves. For a taste of Liquid Liquid, check the 1983 video for ‘Cavern’ below, the bassline of which will be familiar to Grandmaster Flash fans - it was sampled for ‘White Lines (Don't Do It)’, a borrowing which later became subject to a expensive lawsuit (Liquid Liquid lost, a decision which partially led to the demise of the band in 1984).
The CD and 3x12” vinyl compiles all three of Liquid Liquid’s original 99 Records EPs with ten previously unreleased bonus tracks. All tracks have been digitally remastered, and the artwork is designed by band member Richard McGuire.
