  • Korg has updated one of its best-selling synths. At the NAMM trade show in California, which opened yesterday, January 25th, the Japanese synth giant showed a new, portable digital synth in its MicroKORG range. The MicroKORG 2 has the same mini-key design and built-in gooseneck mic and vocoder, but offers a new sound engine, a looper, a new vocal processor with harmoniser and hard-tuning functions, and a colour LCD screen with an oscilloscope. The user interface is graphically led, presenting parameter information with charts, images and patterns. The FX section features nine new types of modulation with dynamics effects, plus six types of delay and reverb. The original MicroKORG was released more than 20 years ago and has been in continuous production ever since. Combining portability with broad functions, a low price and ease of use, it was a runaway success for Korg and heralded an era of small, powerful, digital instruments with microkeys. Despite its diminutive size and price, the original MicroKORG proved highly popular with many celebrated producers. Over the past two decades, artists including Legowelt, Dana Ruh, Jamie Jones, Dorian Concept and Borusiade have all spoken to Resident Advisor about their use of the synth. Watch a video about the MicroKORG 2.
The MicroKORG 2 will be available later this year, priced €599 or $699. Limited edition black and white versions will be available at launch, along with the standard grey model.
