  • Nowadays is hosting an event focused on New York's new City of Yes initiative and its effects on nightlife. Tomorrow afternoon, December 12th, ZONED IN will discuss how the zoning changes could impact clubs and other creative spaces in the city. The event is organised by Lauren Goshinski (AKA Boo Lean) and Tara Duvivier (AKA DJ Tara) of the Pratt Center, who will bring guest speakers from the NYC Department of City Planning and the NYC Office of Nightlife, including New York's new nightlife mayor, Jeffrey Garcia. (Full disclosure: Goshinski is on the board of Resident Advisor.) "As a curator, event producer, DJ and [partygoer], navigating archaic city regulations has been something me and others come up against all the time," Goshinski told Resident Advisor. "I want to see more creative use of space that I know is restricted by current regulations—and more spaces owned, run, etc. by femme, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ [and] folks who don't have deep pockets. This is the first step to knowing how the land and rules work—and how they may change—so we can keep it moving." Goshinski said that she and Duvivier organised the info session so that key players in local nightlife may know how to get their voices heard before the city council vote next spring. The City of Yes proposal aims to update zoning with a goal of a more equitable and sustainable city. Its three main initiatives revolve around carbon neutrality, economic opportunity and housing opportunity. The programme also offers to "support businesses and job growth by ensuring a wider range of businesses can use existing commercial space" as well as restructuring the current zoning rules, which have "barely changed" in over 50 years. Update, December 12th: This piece was updated to include a disclaimer regarding Goshinski's position on RA's board.
