  • Moog has just put out a new duophonic soft-synth. Named Mariana, it's a two-oscillator bass synth with an additional sub-oscillator and a noise generator. It can play two notes at once or you can use it bi-timbrally, as two separate instruments layered on top of each other. Each main oscillator has five waveforms and the sub has three. It also offers discrete low- and high-pass filters, which can be triggered in series or parallel, plus a separate filter for the sub-oscillator. Like the Minimoog and other Moog synths, each oscillator will also start to saturate and overdrive if turned up to full volume. There is a separate saturation control in Mariana's FX section, which also includes a delay and a chorus, each with its own high-pass filter. There is also a comprehensive compressor for the main output and three envelopes—one for the amp, one for the filter and a third that can be used for modulation. Other modulation sources include six LFOs and two random value generator that can be assigned to almost any knob, as can velocity, aftertouch, release velocity and MPE signals, if your control surface can send that info. Mariana also responds to control voltage, if you have a way to send that into the hardware that's running the synth. Moog has created software emulations of some of its classic synths in the past, but this is only the second time the company has released a soft synth that's an original design. It follows the release last year of software emulations of its Moogerfooger FX pedals, and the acquisition of the company by inMusic earlier this year. Watch a video about Mariana.
Mariana is available now, currently priced $49 for the desktop version or $14.99 for the iOS version.
