  • A new nightlife organisation has been founded in Kyiv. UNight is made up of clubs, bars, festivals and promoters in the Ukrainian capital. Its founding members are HVLV Bar, ∄ (AKA K41), Keller, Sloi Bar, Party of Ravers and "Art – Weapon" NGO. UNight's mission is to empower the nightlife sector by making the industry safer and more sustainable, especially during the ongoing war with Russia. Its focus will be on representation, rights protection, research, lobbying, safe zones and international participation. The group was inspired by other organisations including the Berlin Clubcommission, NTIA UK, Bar & Club Kommission Zürich and MTL 24/24 in Montreal. "We're looking forward to connecting with these and similar organisations, nurturing collaborative initiatives, exchanging our experiences and seamlessly integrating ourselves into the global nighttime community," said head of UNight, Andy Yankovskyi, co-owner of HVLV, in a press statement. Speaking to Resident Advisor, Yankovskyi added that "we'd like to make the industry recognised on a state, city and governmental level, and not just be treated like cafés or restaurants, but as cultural institutions. We need to work on PR regarding the general public and create a dialogue with our neighbours. Finally, we need to build relationships with the police and the military, and find a way to eliminate discrimination and use of excessive force from their side towards the venues and visitors." Last year in November, HVLV was the target of a far-right group during a "crusade" against clubs. Shortly after, hundreds of people protested for safer nightlife in Kyiv after multiple clubs were attacked. UNight also aims to protect these nightlife institutions through its campaign.
