  • Lisbon non-profit arts space and club Arroz Estúdios is at risk of closure due to redevelopment. Earlier this week, the venue shared a statement on the situation via its website. "Facing eviction, Arroz Estúdios lacks a permanent home, limiting the association's potential impact," the post read. "We humbly request your support in the form of provision of a permanent space. As a non-profit, Arroz Estúdios urgently needs governmental support to secure a lasting location, integrated into urban planning for their artistic community's growth." The statement also alludes to other spaces in Lisbon that are under threat of closure. "Arroz Estúdios isn't alone in facing the threat of closure. Numerous music and arts venues in Lisbon are experiencing similar challenges, with many forced to leave their spaces or forced outside of the city centre." In response to the potential closure, Arroz Estúdios Association is currently petitioning Lisbon's city council to provide it with a permanent home, which the association says was previously promised to them. The club is also accepting donations towards operating costs in the intervening time, to "help sustain its operations and continue its vital work within the community." Founded in 2018, Arroz Estúdios has worked with a litany of artists, labels and collectives over the last five years, hosting performances from the likes of A Guy Called Gerald, Bambounou, DJ Danifox, Mor Elian, rRoxymore and Violet. Sign the petition. We'll report more on this story as it unfolds. Photo: Marina Mole
