  • Thousands of Berliners are expected to take to the streets next month to protest the expansion of the A100 motorway. Set to take place on September 2nd, a protest rave has been organised collaboratively by the BI A100 citizens' group, Berlin Club Commission and a handful of clubs that are at risk of closure if the expansion goes ahead, such as ://about blank, Renate, Else and Club OST. "We call on Berlin's urban society to end this destructive project permanently and irrevocably, and to overturn the federal transport route plan and its numerous road construction projects," a statement from BI A100 read. "As a civil society alliance of neighbourhood residents, climate activists and clubbers, we turn up the bass and invite you to a protest rave against the A100." The 17th construction phase of the A100, which would see the motorway extended from Treptower Park to Storkower Strasse, could be "devastating," according to the Club Commission. In a statement from earlier in the year, the commission stressed that at least 21 cultural institutions—ranging from clubs and bars to cinemas and youth centres—would be under threat. "The plans are still based on the idea from the 1990s that the space required for this was largely unused," Club Commission spokesperson Lutz Leichsenring told Resident Advisor. "Since then however, a diverse and lively cultural landscape with internationally renowned clubs has developed. Maintaining this is more sustainable and worthwhile for Berlin than continuing to build the A100." Leichsenring confirmed that the Club Commission is facilitating regular meetings with affected clubs and politicians. "For example, this week we're meeting with Clara Herrmann, the district mayor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg," he said. In addition to the motorway extension's threat to the city's cultural landscape, BI A100 also highlighted the environmental concerns attached to its construction. The group spoke of rising "noise and exhaust emissions" in the affected neighbourhoods, and said the proposals emphasise "the power of the automobile companies" in Germany. The 16th construction phases of the A100, which is currently under construction, will cost around €700 million. Experts believe the 17th phase could cost more than €1 billion. We'll report more on this story as it develops.
