  • East London's Werkhaus is closing its doors in September. As confirmed via Instagram, the venue will throw its final parties next month. The only closing show confirmed so far is on September 15th, featuring Kyle Hall back-to-back Steven Julien (FKA FunkinEven) all night long. "In 2020, we were about to launch a huge new calendar with Disclosure opening our spring season with a massive two-night show, [but] we all know what happened next with Covid-19," general manager Luca Pilato said in a press statement. "Two years on, and despite the support of our owners, we have decided as a team that the rising running costs combined with a reduced interest in late-night drinking culture and the fact we only have limited late-night events per year have made the space nonviable.” Werkhaus opened in September 2019 after being refurbished. With space for 300 people, it was previously known as The Back Room of Cafe 1001, the sister venue of Cafe 1001, which still operates Werkhaus. Past guests include Finn Johannsen, Interplanetary Criminal, Club Fitness and more. Read Werkhaus's statement in full, and read our recent interview with Steven Julien.
