  • Claude Young appears to have hung up his headphones. The Detroit-born artist shared a post on Instagram saying he's "done with the DJ thing for good." The post goes on to say: "That means don't ask me about shows, or remixes or anything. It's officially OVER." He also said he felt "really good" about the decision. (RA approached Young but he declined to comment further.) In comments under the post, he said he's still going to write music but criticises the "minstrelsy" of DJ culture. "It doesn't look underground, it just feels 'tainted'. And I don't want to be associated with stuff that feels inauthentic." Young grew to prominence as a DJ and producer in the mid-'90s with releases on Frictional, DJAX-Up-Beats, Andrew Weatherall's Emissions Audio Output Recordings and his own label, Utensil. He moved to the UK in 1995 and split his time between Tokyo and Glasgow for many years. Read Young's original post in full. "Yesterday was the day I knew would eventually come. The day I became bored and annoyed with the whole thing. It's time to regenerate. It's been a blast but I'm done with the DJ thing for good. That means don't ask me about shows, or remixes or anything. It's officially OVER. And I feel really good about it. Thanks for riding with me all these years." Correction, July 23rd: A previous version of this article was wrong to infer that Young switched his Instagram profile from public to private, and subsequently deleted other social media accounts, after announcing his retirement. Update, July 23rd: This piece has been updated to include Young's original post in full, as well as more context into the body of the article.
