  • Sheffield DIY organisation Gut Level is coming to the Barbican in London next month. Part of design collective RESOLVE's them's the breaks programme, DIY In The North: Strength, Resistance & Hedonism is a month-long exhibition on DIY club culture in the north of England, displaying archival photos from fellow initiatives Mondo Radio, Partisan Collective, Wharf Chambers, MAP Charity and Quarry. Members from these organisations will participate in a workshop. There will also be a party at the Barbican on June 3rd. Entitled The Cute and Sexy North, the event will host music from Mondo Radio's MYNA and Malus, Cosmic Slop alumni Cosmic Tom and bossDADDY, and Gut Level's resident DJs. Tickets include entry to a nearby afterparty—the lineup for which is still TBA. (Membership to Gut Level is required to attend the afterparty.) "We don't need validation from the Barbican, and grassroots DIY parties will continue on long after its walls have crumbled," Gut Level told Resident Advisor. "But this is a nice example of how large/stable institutions can give space and resources to grassroots organisations during a time when many small cultural spaces are struggling. Credit here to RESOLVE who've been the instigators behind this. Cross-collaboration between small collectives is the real exciting thing here that we hope to continue." Gut Level is a not-for-profit that formerly ran a nightclub for marginalised people in Sheffield. After losing its venue last year due to redevelopment, the team has been offering arts events, workshops, communal meals and parties at a new temporary home.
