  • A new record shop is opening in Peckham, South London, this weekend. Located in Holdrons Arcade, Steak Records will stock a broad range of second-hand records–spanning techno, house and boogie through to soul, jazz and hip-hop–alongside new releases from local labels such as Eglo, Tiff's Joints and Group BraCil. The shop will be run and curated by Jon Phonics, a DJ and founder of the labels Astral Black and Scenic Route (which he cofounded with fellow London artist Bryce's Brother). "With Steak Records I want to contribute towards a record shopping culture that demystifies the 'grumpy record store' stereotype and encourages music discovery, while cultivating a creative hub for labels and artists operating in the South London area," he told Resident Advisor. "The stock largely will be updated fortnightly with bits from recent trips to Japan, New York and Brazil, and there are plans for regular events that will act as launch parties for releases on both Astral Black and Scenic Route as well as spotlighting other creatives doing great things in the local community." Taking place this Saturday, February 11th, a launch party featuring sets from Jon Phonics, 404 eros and Poison Zcora will be streamed live on Balamii, a radio station also based in Holdrons Arcade. Check out the flyer.
