- Out in February, The Living City and Psychogeography explore the rich depths of the conceptualist and musical innovator.
Warp Records-backed label Ndeya will release a trove of Jon Hassell's studio jams, demos and alternate cuts on February 17th.
The upcoming releases dive into the American trumpeter, composer and theorist's late-'80s period. The Living City features six tracks recorded live during an audiovisual installation by the Jon Hassell Band inside the World Financial Center Winter Garden in New York. Psychogeography is a collection of outtakes, sketches and studio demos that collectively form a rethinking of Hassell's 1990 album, City: Works Of Fiction.
Both releases will be available on double-vinyl cut by Stefan Betke (AKA German dub-techno artist Pole), with liner notes from Hassell and Brian Eno plus archival images from the period and a download code for digital versions of the albums. A double-CD will also be available, released under the name Further Fictions.
Hassell pioneered the concept of Fourth World music, combining elements of non-Western traditional sounds with electronic techniques. From the '60s until his death in 2021, he collaborated with artists including Terry Riley, Juan Atkins, Moritz von Oswald and Carl Craig.
Watch a teaser for Further Fictions.
Resident Advisor talked at length with Hassell in 2015 for an Exchange.
