  • 52 years after its invention, Moog Music's Minimoog Model D is back in production at the company's factory in Asheville, North Carolina. Originally released in 1970, the all-analog synth gained acclaim for packaging the sound of Moog Music's 1960s modular synthesizers into a pre-wired format. Almost immediately, it became a staple on stages and in studios worldwide, and its impact on disco, funk, new wave, techno, house, hip-hop and many other genres can't be understated. In its heyday, the synth was popularised by a diverse array of artists, including Herbie Hancock, Kraftwerk, Sun Ra, Giorgio Moroder and Parliament Funkadelic. Now, more than 50 years later, Moog Music has updated the synth with new features, including improved MIDI functionality and a spring-loaded pitch wheel that returns to centre upon release. But otherwise, the modern design retains the same sound engine and audio signal path that Bob Moog and his team engineered in the '70s, as well as the series of popular functional modifications from the 2016 production run. "This attention to detail in materials and build allows us to connect directly to the legacy and character of this legendary instrument," said Moog Music's Steve Dunnington. "The Minimoog Model D is more than just a collection of circuits in a box—it's a true musical instrument that is a joy to program and play. Bob [Moog] always recognised the importance of an instrument's feel, and we've gone to great lengths to honour his practises through the re-introduction and manufacture of this beautiful synthesizer." To celebrate the reissue, The Will Gregory Moog Ensemble conducted a live performance featuring ten musicians, each using their own Minimoog Model D. Watch the performance.
