  • A new book from author and scholar McKenzie Wark will examine the relationship between underground dance music and late capitalism. Out in March 2023 through Duke University Press, Raving draws on Wark's experiences as a member of New York's queer and trans rave scene. According to the synopsis, it "invokes a trans practice of raving as a timely aesthetic for dancing in the ruins of this collapsing capital." Raving is part of the Practices series, which encourages hobbyists, devotees and enthusiasts to write about the activities they love. Past titles include Fly-Fishing, Running and Juggling. Wark, a professor of Media and Cultural Studies at New York's The New School, has written extensively on topics such as media theory, critical theory and new media, and is best known for the 2004 book A Hacker Manifesto, which criticises the commodification of information in the age of digital culture and globalisation. In 2020, electronic artists Bergsonist and Speaker Music released Sublime Language of My Century, a collaborative album that reflected on the concept of "fluid electronic social thought" outlined by Wark in her book Capital Is Dead. An active member of the New York club scene, Wark also participated in Writing on Raving, a non-fiction reading series that took place at Nowadays, earlier this year.
