  • Experimental electronic festival Berlin Atonal is putting together a three-day event to honour the late avant-garde composer Iannis Xenakis. Happening from November 18th through 20th at Kraftwerk Berlin, X100 features live performances on the venue's main floor, with afterparties at OHM. Many shows are inspired by Xenakis' style while others will reinterpret or directly perform his compositions. UPIC System, a compositional tool designed by the Greek-French pioneer, will also be used by certain acts. Booked artists include Florian Hecker, Russell Haswell, Pan Daijing, Lee Gamble, JJJJJerome Ellis and LABOUR. Moritz von Oswald will collaborate with percussionist Adam Weisman and pianist Prodromos Symeonids, while Puce Mary will perform alongside Bill Kouligas. Xenakis, who passed away in 1997, was known for powerful electroacoustic music made with unconventional techniques such as proto-granular synthesis. An architect by training, he frequently employed mathematical models in composition and remains a massive influence on contemporary music theory.
