NZIRIA, the new alias from Tullia Benedicta, has an album on the way in May honouring Neapolitan culture.
Out May 20th on Gabber Eleganza's Never Sleep label, XXYBRID is the first release by Benedicta's new alias, which aims to androgenise the neomelodic genre and draw on specific elements of their Neapolitan roots. The first single from the eight-track LP, "Amam Ancora," is out now.
Neomelodic music has its roots in Naples in the '70s and '80s. Its lyrical themes tended to focus on crime, possessivity, heteronormativity and social collapse. Benedicta subverts these ideas on XXYBRID.
"I tried to encapsulate in this record that small symbolic universe which, for me at least, is Neapolitan culture," they said. "Some of these images are reminiscences of my childhood, while others are things I discovered a lot later, when I decided to look back at my origins and embrace them with pride."
XXYBRID will be the first album on Never Sleep since it launched in 2019. As well as music, the label released a photo book, Hardcore Soul, in 2019.
