  • Eavesdrop is a new audiophile bar in New York. Equipped with custom-built speakers, the 1,000-square-foot space is located in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighbourhood and officially opens to the public in early March. Operating during weekdays and weekends, it invites local curators, labels, record stores and artists to play deep cuts of electronic, jazz, soul, hip-hop and experimental music. Dan Wissinger, cofounder and head of programming at Eavesdrop, told Resident Advisor that he thinks these sounds aren't always heard in New York nightlife and deserve a high-end aural experience, Designed by Danny Taylor, owner of New York audio consultancy House Under Magic, Eavesdrop's soundsystem features Danley Sound Lab SH60 loudspeakers and Seaton Submersive subs built into a sleek cabinet with integrated lighting. The DJ booth includes Technics turntables, Pioneer CDJs and a MasterSounds Radius rotary mixer from audio engineer Andy Rigby-Jones of Allen & Heath. Walls and ceiling are also covered with acoustic treatment. "We incorporated the same design principles as one would in building a recording studio, such as hidden sound absorption and treatment," said Taylor. Eavesdrop's interior and graphic design is also informed by acoustics, with the square, grid-like shape of its speakers mirrored in its layout and logo font. The goal is to create a cosy, wine bar-meets-izakaya ambience where people can sit and talk in a volume-controlled setting without having to strain their voices, Wissinger explained. "My friends and I used to have the best times kicking it in our living room taking turns mixing on a cheap controller," he added. "In that type of environment, any track that felt right was welcome. We love New York's nightlife, but none of the places we knew replicated that living room experience." In addition to DJ sessions, Eavesdrop eventually plans to expand its programming to other events such as record release parties and talks. For the grand opening on the weekend of March 4th, Mood Hut's CZ Wang and Renata Do Valle will be behind the decks. Check out more pictures of the space and visit its website for event updates.
