  • Clubs in Ibiza have been given the green light to reopen in April, Diario de Ibiza reports. The news emerged last week from international tourism fair FITUR, which took place in Madrid. José Luis Benítez, manager of nightlife association Ocio de Ibiza, said "the idea is that the opening will be at the end of April, two weeks ahead of what is normally done" and continue "until October… November if all goes well." This is a huge boon to Ibiza's nightlife industry, which hasn't been fully operational since before the pandemic. According to Diario de Ibiza, villa bookings are up 13 percent this summer compared to 2019, with the average stay increasing from a few days to one or two weeks. "It's gonna be a big hype," Ibiza-based DJ and promoter Ryan O'Gorman told RA, "kinda like there was in London when events reopened [...] If clubs maintain their no-photography rules, that would be great. It would be nice to see people just enjoying themselves and dancing and interacting with others." In terms of restrictions, clubs are expected to require vaccine passports for entry "as a security tool," said Iago Negueruela, minister for tourism, commerce and employment in the Balearic Islands. Also appearing at FITUR was businessman Abel Matutes Prats, president of Palladium Hotel Group, which runs multiple venues and hotels on the island. Speaking to Diario de Ibiza, he said nightlife was "fundamental" to the island, while also revealing plans to expand the luxury tourism market with new hotels and a shopping centre. "It's ludicrous to think that Ibiza's leisure offer isn't important for the island's future," he told Diario de Ibiza. "Of course, there are some things that must be kept under control." Following the good news from FITUR, Amnesia announced its opening party on May 21st. Defected, which returns to Eden this season, had already confirmed its longest-ever season in December. "[Clubs are] a safe place where people can do things within the laws of what you're supposed to do," said O'Gorman. "[During the pandemic, there was] a massive illegal villa party scene with no safety measures, and a big criminal element made a lot of money. So I think having safe spaces available for people to go clubbing is a positive thing." Spain currently has the highest vaccination rate in the world, with 80.8 percent of the population fully vaccinated, according to Our World In Data. Photo: Sebastian Coman
