London label MOVES Recordings will release two compilations tomorrow, December 10th, celebrating the biggest moments in Afrobeats, rap and drill.
5 Years of Culture : Afrobeats and 5 Years of Culture : Rap & Drill features artists like Naira Marley, Belly Squad, Skengdo & AM and Ivorian Doll, with 19 and 20 tracks on each compilation respectively.
"I grew up in UK rave culture," head of A&R Ian McQuaid told Resident Advisor. "From Chicago house and Detroit techno, to the MC-led Jamaican/British hybrids that soundtracked my life; jungle, garage, grime right through to UK funky. MOVES has focused on the next steps in that lineage, which has led us to championing Afrobeats and drill and will see us always looking forward to the next sound."
He added: "Our label exists to remind people of the sheer cultural clout immigration has given this small island. Our staff are Ghanaian, English, Nigerian, Jamaican, American, French, Irish and more. That diversity is a strength, and until recently, something we didn't even consider noteworthy. Now, as our island takes some dark turns, I feel it's important to recognise."
Launched in 2016, MOVES found instant success with Belly Squad's track "Banana." The following year, MOVES: The Sound Of UK Afrobeats marked the first compilation of its kind, and the label has since gone on to champion drill, grime, hip hop, amapiano, drum & bass, bassline and more.
