  • SONDUKE, an independent publication focused on creatives around the Arab Gulf and broader SWANA region, has just launched. Named after the Arabic word for "a vault" or "safe," Kuwait-based SONDUKE aims to bring international attention to Arab talent, as well as exposing local audiences to radical voices abroad. Highlighting electronic music, art and design, the digital venture consists of interviews, reviews, a mix series, photography and graphic visuals. The content is currently in English but efforts are underway to go bilingual (English and Arabic), founders Malak Al Suwaihel and Hamad Al Mujeem told Resident Advisor. Going forward, SONDUKE also intends to host events and live shows. Artists currently featured are Slikback, Flora Yin-Wong, Mars89, Saudia Arabia's Msylma, Cairo-based ISMAEL and estoc. Experimental art and music around the Arab world is a burgeoning scene but these talents don't get the attention they deserve, Al Suwaihel and Al Mujeem told RA. "There is a deficit in media platforms willing to highlight creative content from experimental artists," they said. Institutions such as Arabic-language publication Ma3azef and Palestine's Radio Alhara "are now paving the way for platforms like ours," they continued.
