Lena Willikens & Sarah Szczesny will release the Phantom Seance Ballett box set via Utter on November 19th.
The recordings on Phantom Seance Ballett are culled from various live performances staged by the well-loved DJ Willikens and her longtime artistic collaborator. The 21-minute A-side, "Identikit Arkaden Seance," was recorded at an October 2019 exhibition at Neuer Aachener Kunstverein where Szczesny and Willikens showed new video works.
At the show, seven performers carried boomboxes playing individual audio tracks, wandering inside and outside the Kunstverein, while Viktoria Wehrmeister and Detlef Weinrich played improvised music. (The latter is the cofounder of Salon des Amateurs and makes music as Tolouse Low Trax.) The second piece, "Studio Chamber Seance," includes snippets of various performances "deconstructed and rearranged with additional sound material from the Lena Willikens & Sarah Szczesny archive" with various music from Weinrich and Wehrmeister weaving throughout.
In addition to the vinyl record, which comes loaded with 20 hidden locked grooves, Willikens and Szczesny collaborated with Till Sperrle to design a fold-out box including a credits poster detailing the samples collaged into the sound, a 36-page book with imagery from various shows, an essay by Thomas Vorreyer and a sticker pack. A limited-to-50 artist edition includes ten special prints within a stamped, hand-numbered box.
