  • Daniel Martin-McCormick, a New York producer formerly known as Ital who now goes by Relaxer, is releasing an album on Planet Mu for the first time since 2014. Concealer is a synth-heavy work that touches on experimental techno and house music with guest appearances from Kahee Jeong and Emilie Weibel. Due on October 15th, the ten-track LP carries influences from Morton Subotnick and Ben Vida. In a statement, Martin-McCormick, founder of the Lovers Rock label and former co-director of Sustain-Release, describes the sounds on the album as "resonant." These include "sounds disappearing into a field, or being obscured, or crumbling, or being subsumed." Thanks to digital tools, these sounds have a "sickly, shiny dimensionality which is a little (a lot?) un-human," he said. "This decoupling from the human-ness of sound means the sounds can speak in their own special way. Of course, all sounds can speak in their way, but a vivid, digital, melty synth speaks in a way that feels more autonomous, or less tied to historical/encultured musical gestures. It hovers in the air and melts and glides. It's a little gross." Martin-McCormick's last release on Planet Mu was the 2014 album Endgame as Ital. As Relaxer, his recent releases include Hedonic Fatigue from 2020 and Coconut Grove from 2019. Read our review of that latter album.
