  • Beloved DJ, producer, live artist and label owner Michel Baumann, AKA Soulphiction and Jackmate, has died. Reports of his death began circulating on social media earlier today, May 24th. Last month, Baumann posted on Facebook that he was in hospital undergoing chemotherapy. Born in Stuttgart, Baumann's first loves were funk, reggae, jazz and hip-hop before he discovered house music in the early '90s. As Soulphiction and Jackmate, his two best-known and most prolific aliases, he released dozens of EPs and albums on influential labels such as Playhouse, Perlon, Pampa, Poker Flat, Sonar Kollektiv and his own Philpot, which he ran with Tobias Ettle. Releasing tracks right up until 2021, Baumann will be remembered as a master of the German deep house and minimal house sounds. Read some tributes to Baumann, and listen to "Bust Me" featuring Frankie Walfare, released on Perlon in 2000.
