  • The music and audio products group Focusrite PLC has purchased Sequential LLC, the synthesiser company founded by Dave Smith. The deal sees Sequential become a fully owned subsidiary of the Focusrite group. Dave Smith will continue guiding the company and the acquisition will not affect daily operations and product development. A press release says Sequential will have access to "greater resources to expand its global markets and future R&D efforts." Originally founded by the late Rupert Neve, Focusrite was purchased by Phil Dudderidge in 1989 and went on to acquire Novation in 2004. In 2019 the group acquired the speaker companies ADAM Audio and Martin Audio. Dave Smith and Sequential are key actors in synthesiser history. In the late '70s they released the Prophet-5, the first programmable polyphonic synthesiser, and helped the development of the MIDI syncing protocol. Watch Dave Smith talk about the acquisition.
