- The LP runs six minutes in total, meant as a statement about shortening attention spans.
Barcelona label Modern Obscure Music is releasing a new six-minute compilation titled PRSNT.
Developed by the imprint's founders Christian Lopez and Pedro Rufi, the concept for the album comes from a study detailing how the fast-paced nature of online content consumption is shortening attention spans. The pair's interest in the topic deepened upon learning a third of listeners using digital platforms skip to the next track after playing the first 30 seconds.
Each of the album's 12 tracks are about 32 seconds in length, featuring tracks from the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kelman Duran, Lafawndah, Laurie Spiegel, Lucrecia Dalt and more.
"Researchers note that this push for speed is changing the way people think," the label says. "The need for efficiency and instant pleasure leads to a dumbing down of information intake so that people become scanners and 'decoders' of information, cruising across the screen to pick up bytes, rather than delving towards a deeper understanding. The medium is changing the message. And attention spans are getting shorter and shorter every year. We live in a time where people consume fast without paying real attention to anything. We live in the fast lane."
The album is due out on April 16th. Proceeds from the album will go towards a mental health charity.
