  • YUKU is a vinyl store and audio-visual space in the Czech capital that officially launched in October. It sells records, art, audio gear and goods from local designers in addition to hosting live acts and exhibitions. Run by the one-year old record label of the same name, YUKU also lets customers experience virtual reality and play with live visuals, co-curator Ilda Magenta told RA. Just one month after opening, the brick-and-mortar shop was forced to close due to restrictions around COVID-19. It remains shut and for now, the team is focusing on online sales and planning future events, Magenta said. These include a visual installation on store windows by local artist Aeldryn of the Lunchmeat collective and listening parties. "It hasn't been easy to get the store up and running in the time of Covid, particularly as we never opened or run a store before this but it felt right to open it," described Magenta. "Even in difficult conditions, the store is doing exactly what we hoped it would do," she continued: "It has attracted and brought open-minded people together and it's a hub for a different perspective of art and music in Prague." Despite months of closure, the mood at YUKU is optimistic. It's important "to prepare such a space for the better times in future, especially when so many art spaces are under threat," Magenta said.
