  • A new live album of music from influential jazz label Strata Records is in the works. Strata Records: The Sound Of Detroit Reimagined By Jazzanova is the brainchild of Amir Abdullah, AKA DJ Amir, owner of 180 Proof Records, which launched in 2012 to reissue cuts of soul, funk and jazz from the vast archives of the iconic and long-defunct Strata Records. Abdullah, a music historian and collector, owns the licensing rights to the Detroit label. The project, which was made possible due to a successful Kickstarter campaign, will begin on January 5th in Berlin, with Abdullah and Jazzanova overseeing ten musicians who will recreate 11 tracks from the Strata catalogue. The money raised will go towards studio and equipment rental, post-production and the making of a short documentary. Once finished, the LP will be released on limited-edition vinyl. DJ Amir has already revived more than 15 unreleased masters from the Strata catalogue. In 2018, BBE Music and 180 Proof released recordings of Charles Mingus performing live in 1973 at Detroit's Strata Concert Gallery. Founded by Kenny Cox in 1969, Strata Records only released six records before folding in 1975. Watch a video about the live album project.
