  • The American electronic music pioneer Ruth Anderson has died. The composer, educator, orchestrator and flautist passed away following a battle with lung cancer on November 29th, aged 91. She was the founder and director of Hunter College's Electronic Music Studio from 1968 to 1979, which her partner Annea Lockwood described as "the first operative electronic music studio in the CUNY system and one of the first in the USA to be founded and directed by a woman." The recipient of two Fullbright scholarships, Anderson studied composition with Nadia Boulanger, worked as an orchestrator for NBC and began composing for tape as early as 1958. Arc Light Editions is releasing a collection of her work titled Here in 2020. Listen to her 1998 piece, "i come out of your sleep."
