Longform Editions is putting out four new releases for World Listening Day.
The Australian label invites artists to contribute single longform pieces. Releases usually come in quarterly batches, but for this year's World Listening Day, Longform will interrupt its schedule for four new releases: Sweet Water Pools from longtime Raster affiliate Frank Bretschneider, Behind The Spiderweb Gate from viola player Alison Cotton, Cepheid Variables by Mexico's Laura Luna Castillo and Fluid Array by Sun Araw and Mitchell Brown.
The Bretschneider piece was originally recorded in 2014 during a residency at EMS in Stockholm, and later reconfigured for a 4DSOUND performance in Amsterdam.
Longform Editions was started last year and has released music from Norm Chambers, Caterina Barbieri, Yamaneko, Matthewdavid, Rimarimba and more. Founder Andrew Khedoori tells RA that it was something of a reaction to the way listening habits have changed in the wake of streaming services, to "curate a series of pieces that explored and reflected engagement with sound with that specific intent."
"[Deep listening] is a way to reclaim time and space in the fractured world we live in. It can recontextualise your surroundings. It's not just music to mellow you out that’s really become the domain of streaming services' innocuous chill playlists—the infiltration of these only make for a quick fix for the vulnerabilities you might encounter in your day rather than steel your attentions."
"The pieces being collected on Longform Editions have a strength of purpose at their core," he adds, "an approach to listening that's getting lost in the whir and blur of how we live. The way we listen is crucial as it has an effect on how we interact, think and engage with the world. Digital platforms at large aren’t offering this space easily and we’re hoping this goes some way to filling that gap."
