- It's inspired by the 2018 film of the same name, which was Elba's directorial debut.
Actor, DJ and rapper Idris Elba will release a mixtape companion to his 2018 film, YARDIE.
The YARDIE Mixtape features new material from the likes of Toddla T, Mala and Zed Bias. It's described as "the aftershock of YARDIE" by Elba, who has two of his own tracks on the release.
"Making a film as director allowed me, for the first time, to influence the music, in this case reggae," explains Elba in the press release. The film, set in '70s Jamaica and '80s Hackney, London, was based on the 1992 Victor Headley book and features Jamaican and UK soundsystem culture. The YARDIE Mixtape will come out on Elba's 7Wallace label in late June.
Elba DJ'd Coachella this year and raps on Wiley, Sean Paul & Stefflon Don's recent hit single "Boasty."
