  • Gabber Eleganza, AKA Italian artist Alberto Guerrini, has unveiled a new label called Never Sleep, which will curate books, zines, records and apparel. The first release is a book and mixtape called Hardcore Soul, made in collaboration with photographer Ewen Spencer and contemporary artist Mark Leckey. Guerrini and Spencer met in 2017 at a Dalston pub, where they connected over their contrasting backgrounds in gabber and northern soul respectively. According to Guerrini, who has run a visual rave archive since 2011, "Having seen [Spencer's] series on northern soul weekenders and hardcore raves, shot over period of several years, the idea to create something together came very naturally, emerging out of these two seemingly dissimilar scenes." "This is how Hardcore Soul was born," he continues. "A publication that explores the analogies between two worlds, appearing as they do entirely at odds with one another, yet through a shared devotion, rhythmic frenzy and euphoria, both offering on-lookers a key to understanding them." Hardcore Soul will be released on May 19th in a limited run of 500 books and 50 cassette mixtapes. If you're in Berlin, you can check out the launch party at Berlin Art Week on April 26th. Listen to the Hardcore Soul mixtape and preview some of the book's photos.
Never Sleep will release Hardcore Soul on May 19th, 2019.
