  • A new label called Discos Rolas will launch with a self-titled album from the electronic cumbia duo Grupo Jejeje. The California label is run by Gary "Ganas" Garay—an artist, archivist and DJ—and Alexandra "Xandão" Lippman, who compiled the landmark 2017 compilation ¡Un Saludo!—Mexican Soundsystem Cumbia In Los Angeles. They're calling it a "creative research project exploring the cosmic sounds of Latin America through art and anthropology." Grupo Jejeje is the duo of Mexican-American Turbo Sonidero and Persian-Brit Arrabalero, who have been collaborating online since 2014. Last year they finally met in person for sessions in Oaxaca and Tepotzlán, Mexico, to record their debut self-titled album. Their sound is influenced by the synth-heavy regional styles of central Mexico—states like Puebla and San Luis Potosí—and more specifically by the loop and sample-based style called cumbia editada ("edited cumbia"). The album cover and logo come from Mexico City graphic design icon Jaime Ruelas, who created artwork for many of the artists mentioned in our feature about the Mexican sonidero scene last year. Listen to "Llanto Del Faraón."
