- The Canadian dub techno producer teamed up with Camara for the 'covers of covers' LP, which marks the original record's 30th anniversary.
Deadbeat and Camara will release a Cowboy Junkies tribute album called Trinity Thirty on Constellation April 26th.
Deadbeat, real name Scott Monteith, says the idea for the album was hatched when he heard the Cowboy Junkies version of The Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" in an airport and was reminded of his love for the The Trinity Session, a covers-heavy album the band released in 1988. Monteith reached out to the Canadian group to determine whether they had any plans for the record's 30th anniversary (they released Trinity Revisited for the record's 20th). The band said they had no plans for the anniversary and enthusiastically supported of whatever angle Deadbeat chose to take. Monteith then linked up with fellow Canadian Berlin resident Fatima Camara, with whom he'd bonded over a shared love of The Trinity Session.
The original album features covers of classic songs recorded on a single microphone in a church in Toronto with no further mixing or overdubbing. Monteith and Camara took a similar approach, recording Trinity Thirty with single microphones at Berlin's Chez Cherie, "relying heavily on natural room acoustics, committed to raw first takes, guided by an overriding strategy of slowing down all the tempos as far as they could while continuing to channel the warm asceticism of the original album," reads the press release. Monteith and Camara say the end result is "a less electronic album than we imagined making," Trinity Thirty emphasizing a "deceleration and narcotized spaciousness" further brought out by Stefan Betke AKA Pole's mastering.
