  • Music journalist Joe Muggs has written a new book on UK soundsystem culture with photographer Brian David Stevens. Bass, Mids, Tops: An Oral History Of Sound System Culture focuses on what the book's press release calls "the most important influence on contemporary pop music since rock and roll," encompassing "reggae, dub, rave, jungle, trip hop, dubstep, grime" and more. The story is told via interviews with UK scene luminaries like Skream, Mala, Norman Jay, Adrian Sherwood, Dennis Bovell, Dego, Zed Bias, Cooly G, DJ Storm, Shy One (pictured) and more. "I wanted the voices of the subjects to be what dominates," Muggs said to The Wire, "and the overlaps between their stories to show the outlines of what we think of as cultural movements and moments." The book will come with photographs from London's Brian David Stevens, and a foreword from ex-Steel Pulse vocalist Mykaell Riley, who is involved in the Black Music Research Unit at the University of Westminster in London. It's due out in the summer via Strange Attractor. Muggs is a long-time UK music journalist who has also contributed to Resident Advisor.
