  • Arturia has announced a new paraphonic synthesiser called MicroFreak. The synth is built around a digital oscillator holding seven modes from the Mutable Instruments Plaits, one of the most favoured modules in the Eurorack format. Granular, frequency modulation, modal and speech synthesis are among the modes ported from Plaits, while Arturia's own engineers provided Karplus Strong, superwave, wavetable and harmonic synthesis algorithms. The oscillator is shaped by a multimode, 12db-per-octave analogue filter inspired by the Oberheim SEM, while a five-source, seven-destination matrix is on hand for routing modulation around the synth. Sequences can be altered by a Dice function, which adds a user-controlled degree of randomisation, and another called Spice, which changes sequence parameters apart from pitch. The 25-key touch-sensitive keyboard is capable of polyphonic aftertouch and is compatible with MPE for increased expressivity. Two envelopes and a syncable LFO are on hand for shaping the sound while CV outputs allow you to send sequence information to other hardware synthesisers. It'll be out in Spring for $349.
